HHMs and Iowa's Water
- 78.8 percent of Iowans get their drinking water from groundwater sources; only six states rely
more on groundwater for a drinking source
- Nationwide, 41.9 percent of the population gets its drinking water from ground water
- If improperly used and disposed of, HHMs often end up in drinking water
- Contaminated water leads to water purity problems, often resulting in costly water treatment
- HHMs dumped in storm sewers can quickly contaminate surface water.
Surface water is also used as drinking water and is critical for fish and aquatic wildlife and recreation
- Wells are also susceptible to contamination from improper use or disposal of HHMs
